The Tweed is one of the great salmon rivers of Scotland. The story goes a young man named Jack Sweeney fished the Tweed every day to catch enough salmon to support his family. One day he hooked the Salmon Queen Alaiy, Queen of the Tweed River. She granted him one wish to let her go. He asked for gold for his family. She granted the wish but as she leapt from the hook she took him with her. His mother was so distraught at the loss of her son her tears filled the Tweed to overflowing with bitter sorrow until the Queen Alaiy, to save the salmon, returned Jack to his mother.
